Need help with drivers window, PLEASE!

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition. The drivers window has finally stopped working as far as rolling the window up and down. The motor still works and I can hear it operating but the window no longer works. I had a shop peek inside without removing the panel and the fella said it is because the cable has become unraveled some and thus entwined around part of the motor. He said this is why is sounds like it is (or was) grinding when you tried to make it go up or down. Does this sound correct? I have gotten braver (or dumber) at trying to fix as much as I can on my own vehicles, largely due to cost issues. If this is the correct diagnosis, where can I find the cable, how much should I anticipate to pay for it, etc? Any advice would be helpful. It would be nice to roll up to a drive-thru fast food joint again and NOT have to open the door to pay and pick up my food (among other reasons I want it to work again). Thanks for any insights you may be able to share.

The cable ends up connecting to a cable block does break from time to time. If the cable pulled off there normally the window drops. If for some reason its just snagged around something I'm sure plastic guide broke. Pull the door panel and check to see exactly what is wrong. Might be an easy fix, might need a window regulator assembly. Could run you around 100 bucks for the parts. Its easy to pull it apart and look what you are in for. Any auto parts store will sell the cable/motor assembly

Previous Poster is Correct! What USUALLY Breaks in the Cherokee Window --- Is the Window Regulator. AND --- Specifically : It Is the Cable Block assy. You may FIX the Problem in TWO different ways: Method # 1 : Replace the Window Regulator Assy. (Can Find them On the Internet) Method # 2 : IF when You Pull It Apart --- It Is ONLY the Cable Block Assy which has Broken --- There are NOW Companies on The Internet which will sell you --- JUST the Cable Block Assy (Bolts to Existing Regulator) Cost? About -- $ 30 or $ 40 Bucks. YOUR Choice. After the HOLIDAYS --- Sometimes the $$ --- are a little tight. Keep us Posted. --- JB

Thanks very much LGR. I appreciate you sharing that info with me. I have removed door panels so that scares me not. I haven't piddled with any windows or motor assembly prior so that had me just a bit more concerned. I will keep you posted. Thanks again!

Thanks also Jimbob. I am learning quickly to like this site. I am no mechanic, but I am getting braver at trying my hand at things and with your input, maybe I can tackle this one too. Will let you know what goes!

Any. UPDATE. -- On this one? Did You wind up replacing the Window Regulator -- OR? Perhaps just the Cable Block Assy---- ? JB

Hey JB. Had to replace the whole regulator. You were right all along. Thanks for your assistance very much!
