Need help w/ timing a 1985 Cherokee

It has the 2.8l engine w/ manual transmission. It belongs to a friend, so I don't have the Jeep or the Chilton's with me.

Chilton's says to pull the vac advance, but there is no vac advance...as usual, Chilton's is absolutely useless.

So, how do you go about timing this vehicle?

Get #1 up on tdc and when you drop the dis. in have the rotor button pointing at #1 the firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order with a clockwise rotation

Thanks for the response. I must not have been clear in my original post. I don't need the firing order and we aren't replacing the distributor; we need to set the timing advance.

My friend just called and said the "J connector" is what he needs to disconnect, but doesn't know where that connector is located. I'm searching Google, but can't find any info on how to set the timing on this Jeep.

Help?

OK. I talked to him again. He said that on the firewall emissions sticker it says to disconnect connector J when setting the timing. He looked in the Chilton's to find connector J and the schematic shows J going into the distributor, but does not show what the other end of the wire is connected to. He can't unplug it on the distributor side because all of the dist. wires are in one plug, so he needs to disconnect it on the other side, but doesn't know where it goes.

Is it, by chance, the coolant temp sensor?

Does that make sense?

Knock sensor. The timing gets computer adjusted by any internal noise in the motor. Even stuff that just mimics ping makes it retard the timing and cut power.
