my oil pump went out on my 86 cherokee when my son was drive it to help recover a deer lost the motor trans is fine however it is a 2.8 should i rebuild this weak motor or swap . which motor would be the easy swap ?has anyone done this before ? an a all information would be a great help please let me know thank you all jason

If you think your jeep is Underpowered a 4.0 liter is always a good swap over a 2.8 liter. i'm sure the guys here will be able to help you on the compatibility with the Transmission. And Welcome to Jeepz.

A blower...a little nitrous...lean mixture...it'll smoke a big block Chevy...lol

Based on my little bit of research, the 2.8 is anemic at best. You should do the swap if you have the talent and money to do so.

thank you for the reply if i go woth a 4.0 will it be better to buy a whole jeep or just the motor an trans ? i think the 4.0 pc control if i remember right? been out of repair work a while now. my son loves the jeep 14yr old likes hitting the mud. so i will fix the jeep for sure ,to pass it on to him. now will be a good time for a lift 2.5 or 3 is there kits for it cheap . or will a 4 in be best ? will it mess with the handlin very much for this will the my sons next year thank you for your advice an sharing your know how with these jeep in advance jason

Your engine bay isn't long enough for the 4.0L, more room was added later for the longer engine.

Consider a 3.4L, it should be a bolt-in. The 2.8L is underpowered and problematic.

You could also do an EFI swap for more power and better economy from @ '88 S10 or Camaro with 2.8 or 3.4L.

That would be fun! Is forced induction OK for a 4WD vehicle? If so, how about a turbo Buick V6 stump puller? I don't know if you are familiar with the Buick turbo V6, but it's one of the meanest, baddest engines ever built- and they are bullet-proof.

Not quite bulletproof (there were quite a few with rods sticking out the side behind the dealership when they first came out) Just DON'T run a Fram on it!
