Hello again, continuing w/ my quest on driving myself crazy on deciding the future of my 1985 cj7 jeep. My question is, I just picked up a 1987 1ton chevy 4x4 w/a 454ci,th400,np205tc,a Dana 60 frt, and a 14 bolt ff rear axle and I would like to know if anyone knows of any good websites w/detailed info and pictures on narrowing these axles? So I purchased this truck for 1,900$ and plan on using everything except the motor which i realize is way to big to fit and I will sell and try and find a sbc to replace it. Everything works on the truck. I actually drove it 1-1/2hrs home w/out any probs travleing at 65mph. Or did I make a mistake in my over excited enthusiasm and purchase the wrong truck? Just need some feed back to settle my nerves. Any help would b very helpful.

That truck is a mud racers dream. As for the axles. The housings are the easy part to modify. But does anyone make custom shafts to the lenght you will need. Might get pretty pricey i would almost check curries site or other drive line sites tgey might have a drop in assembly for cheaper.

Completeoffroad.com can help you with the shafts and I go use the big block. I know someone running one in a 7 with those same axles full width and 44s and it's a beast.

I would love to get some tech info off your friends 7. Esp the 454 install. Any pictures. Anything would b helpful. As far as cost goes for custom shafts I've heard anywhere from 100-175 ea. Does that sound right to u?

using h1 wheels will help pull the tires in,but will leave the hubs sticking out past the sidewall of the tire, easy to hit it on rocks etc.

The D60 is not too hard to narrow, I've narrowed a couple, the best method I have use is to pota-band just inside the inner casting on the long side. then grind what ever remaining welds are on the tube-inner casting and press the tube out. cut the tube to your desired length, true it up and reweld.

This is a way readers digest version, there are a lot of measurements you will need to take prior to cutting.

as for the shafts, I have a local shop that cuts and splines shafts for about $150 per side.

The rear 14 bolt will be a bit harder to narrow, I suggest looking for a Dually D70 or 14 bolt, take off the dually hubs and put on some SRW hubs, should be pretty narrow at that point. A google search will yield the exact measurements.
