My D-30 Lincoln Locker - Pics Inside

Well I got the front diff welded and the on-road performance is fine. I put her in 4 low and switched my posi-lock (home-made) and both frt wheels are definitely locked.

Now I went to unlock my passenger side axle and nothing! It didnt want to release - had to disconnect the cable from the dash and manually push it in to unlock. I thought I had all the linkage set right. Kept testing it before the front was welded with no problems.

I monkeyed around with the linkage in the disconnect system and just cant seem to get it to lock now.

So I now have a 3 wheel drive Jeep!

Looks like I may have to invest in a "real" posilock to make sure it is all functioning correctly.

Well here are some pictures:

That shouldn't go anywhere. I hope you cleaned the weld "spatter" off of the ring gear before you closed it up and ran it.

ooooh yeah.. that is definitely locked...

i believe the reason you can't lock or unlock is because of the torque on the shift collar... if you move forward and/or back slowly while wiggling the steering wheel, it should find a spot where the collar will engage/disengage

Looks good, the more metal the better.

Sometimes it takes rolling not under power and turning the wheel a bit to get the disconnect to unlock.

Found a place

The guy used a 220 Mig, I think he did a good job. I didnt have a problem getting it to lock, just unlock, I creeped backward and turned the wheel and everything. I just have to get in there and adjust the cable again. I wonder if a heavier spring against the shift fork would be better? Then again, I dont want it to pop out either.

Thats what I am Thinking...

As for the welds.....Dont take this the wrong way, But they look bad.
I know its hard to weld metal after years of sitting in oil. I DO HOPE they hold. Tell him to stop being cheap with the argon and crank it up.
I never see that much splatter with a mig ( It looks stick).

This was a 220 mig. You can tell it has not even been wire brushed. Rusty Steel.
Iam not even a good welder, So Ignore me if you like.

it looks like there was NO gas used... or it could have been uncleaned fluxcore... or.... reversed polarity

it does look like there is some spatter on the ring gear

if you take it out of 4wd, you can relieve some of the torque on the collar... and use the turning back and forth trick... all you have to do is relieve the friction on the collar and shaft

Well I have never welded so I relied on the guy to do a good job. Let HOPE it holds. I may just replace with a lock-rite down the road but this was very cost effective way to get the front locked. No vibes from the front driveshaft either. I still may invest in a real posi just to ensure it works when i need it. THanks for your input guys.

A posi is a limited slip and not a locker. You will still have issues with the disconnect regardless of the differential type, unless you address those issues. Changing the differential is not going to fix the disconnect.

The welds should hold, you'll only have it locked offroad, and that's not much torque on the D30 on loose surfaces.

The auto locker is harder on shafts, like when it locks up under wheel spin for instance, that's a lot of shear force to the axle shafts.

I got into the disconnect again today and resolved my issues. You guys were right, just needed to wiggle the wheel a bit and roll forward or backward a few inches and it unlocks no problem. So it looks like I am on the track to getting the rear locked. Havent decided if I want it welded or just get a lockrite. It will be later this spring. I have to get a new softtop first. Thanks for all your input on this Bounty, I cant wait to take her offroad and see what she can do now.

Have you had any problems with your front driveshaft? So far I havent seen any negative effect with it spinning all the time.It seems to be in balance. I have heard of other guys taking it off until they go offroad.

No problems leaving my front driveshaft on. Never heard of any YJ front driveshaft issues, those you heard about may have been bent or had a balance wieght knocked off.
