Can anyone tell me what motors will fit a 84 cherokee without having to do a conversion. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. I have a v-6 now and would like to swap it out. Thanks

Well unforunantly you are stuck with either the 2.8 V6 (piece of shiza) or the 2.5 I4 (not a bad engine but a little weak for a cherokee). Unless you swap out the transmission and transfer case as well thats what you are looking at. If you are going to swap those out you might as well drop in a 350 or something. Only the V6 or I4 will bolt up to your current setup.

However there is a small light at the end of your tunnel. GM makes a nice little 3.4L v6 that is supposed to be pretty good. It was made with S10 2.8V6 owners in mind...but will bolt right into your jeep (might have to move the mounts though).[addsig]

I would toos that stock motor in a heart beat. You have the 2.8 ltr I6 that was also used in the same year chevy s-10's ( yes these engins were sourced from gm) since this is were they got the motors, I would guess that a gm 4.3 would fit in nicly. Some computer mods will be required if you get a vortec but the older 4.3 probably won't. Hell drop in a nicly warmed over AMC 304, GM 305 or 350[addsig]

Yo Ray,
I see you've possibly got the know on 80's wagoneers. maybe you can help?
I am considering purchasing a wagoneer locally an 82 and its got a 6er in it.. i believe its the original, it doesn't run bad or anything, but the tires that are on it are a bit large and I have an old 79 j-10 with an AMC 360 in it.

it sounds like (according to what you were saying to Bross) that I wont be able to hook up my j-10 8cyl to the original wagoneer transmission... right?

just for info my J-10 body is shot, and this 82 wagoneer isn't a bad price if I can get the dealer to knock a few hundred off. but needs tires and exhaust. my j-10 3 speed auto works, but there is a strange area between 2nd and third gears where it will hop back and forth between the 2 gears and I am concerned that i will have to purchase a new transmission if i buy the wagoneer... then the pricetag would surely be too much!\\

thanks! (including anyone else that has info!)

The 4 is a better engine in my opinion, but not much power. I agree the V6 blows. The gearing for the 4 would be better than the 6, maybe 4:11's. That would be the way to go, and find an inline 6. There is a great article about buying cherokees in JP magazine, probably 2 or 3 months ago. It talks about bodies, engines, etc. definately worth getting.

Be sure to check the lenght of the engine bay. And sadly the very excellent 4.3 GM motor is most likely too wide. My Cherokee has a 2.5 AMC motor, and I have found very good results with the proper engine mods combined with proper gearing.

Good luck with the project!

Okay guys here is the scoop.

The GM 2.8L V6 and the AMC 150 I4 share the same bellhousing bolt pattern (60 degree chevy). This is NOT the same pattern as the GM 4.3L, 305 V8, 350 V8, etc...those have the 90degree chevy pattern.

The other AMC engines have the same pattern...

242 I6 (4.0)
258 I6
304 V8
360 V8

will interchange.

Treadcreep...

if your 82 has the 258 inline six then yes the 360 will swap right in (need new mounts though) and bolt up to the transmission. If its the 2.8L V6 then no it wont bolt up (I don't think they used the 2.8 in '82 so it should be the 258).

Bosco...

you will have to do some custom work to switch out those engines and trannies. The engine mounts will have to be relocated for everything to fit.

I just wanted to make sure I got your 90 Degree match up lists of motors correct. The list
242 I6 (4.0)
258 I6
304 V8
360 V8
will allow the GM V8s to bolt up to the transmission with an engine mount change?
