i have found alot of bolt in dana 44s for the jeep tj. can i buy a tj axle and bolt it under the front on my xj? i have look at a friends tj and it all looks the same. but i would like to know before i consider laying down a few grand for a build axle.

Yes, it will bolt in and work, assuming it's the correct gear ratio.

One thing to consider is that most XJ front axles are high pinion, while the TJ front axle is low pinion. The LP axle will work but the gearset runs on the weaker side of the gear, and your pinion and driveshaft is lower to the ground (in harms way).

yea im pricing what it would cost to set up a waggy 44 ( gears locker alloy shafts and 4 link brackets) vs buying a premade one with better alloy shafts all there in one package. i was thinking about buying a high pinoin 44 if i go with a aftermarket one. i dont like the idea of a low pinion much.
