Maint. required light

On the way to work my "Maint reqd" lite came on, I assume thats the same as a "check engine" light. Rather than take it to a mechanic Id like to figure out what the prob may be and possibly fix it myself. Anybody know where to get one of those code readers pretty cheap? I have a 92 YJ 2.5L. Thanks[addsig]

when i need something like a tester and snapon or mac is off the wall i try sears. most of the auto stuff has pretty good warantees too.[addsig]

on a 92 you should be able to pull the codes with out a scan tool. On my 97 you just turn the key on and off several times and the watch the check engine light flash to figure the code number. If this doesnt work, you should be able to run a jumper wire from two the the contacts in the data link connector to pull the codes. Maybe someone on here can tell you which two contacts. Anyway, you read the code like this..... for example, if the code was 25, you'd have 2 flashes, a short pause, then 5 flashes. if there is a longer pause, it means that you have more then one code.

One more thing. Im not sure if this applies to your jeep, but some vehicles have a timer built in, that after so long of time, set off a light to tell you its time for your emissions system to be inspected. This could be what your light is.

I had a problem with my 93 YJ where the check engine light would come on. Turn the key on and off 3 times without starting the jeep then leave it on the third time (I think it's three times). You will see your dash light flash on and off, then pause and start flashing again. Count the flashes and you will get the codes. A short pause is the same number for example 2 flashes, pause, 3 flashes would be 23. A long pause means a new number. You may get more than one code so you may have more than one number. The codes should be in a Haynes auto manual and it'll tell you what the problem is.[addsig]

I had this same issue with my '91 YJ. This light is on a timer. If I remember correctly, it comes on around 80K or 90K miles. This is simply a reminder to change or service your O2 sensor. The thing with the light is that you can't reset it even after you replace the O2 sensor. There's a box on the firewall that needs to be reset by the dealer to make the light go out. You could remove the box to make the light go out, but I think it's illegal to sell your Jeep if you do that or something. When mine came on, I just put a new O2 sensor on myself, popped the dash panel off, and took out the light bulb behind the Maintainence Req'd light. You might look into having the dealer reset the light. It might be cheap or even free for them to do it, depending on how cool the shop is. I hope this helps.[addsig]

the counter is like a little mini-odometer below the dash there... its in a tinted clear box with a bunch of white gears in it. i just yanked mine out and threw it in the neighbor's bushes.

PS... just kidding about the neighbor's bushes...[addsig]

The box on the fire wall actually can be reset. There is a little hole in the back of it where you can see the white gears and there is a little metal arm that looks like it is jammed in the teeth of the gears this is what sets of the light. Just reach in there with something small and pop it up the light should reset. It is just a timer so idiots will take it to the dealer and get robbed.[addsig]

It should be just to the right of the gas pedal. Is is a smoke colored see thru box.[addsig]

nope, not one like described on my firewall :-?

and there's nothing more irritating than paying $$ for someone to do something i should be able to do. maybe they'll do it for free.

sure, a dealer. . .

thought about pulling the light, but i never had a car that had all the lights work at the same time.

some help here, gentleman and ladies?

Hi,
The same happened to me, and thanks to the info found here, I managed to reset this little emiss.maint. timer. It was located as you said under the dash and had no problems at all to find this little "switch" and stop that annoying light! Maybe I really should check that O2-sensor too! :) [addsig]

Some auto parts store will hook there scanner up for free. Autozone has done it for me before. Call around and ask.[addsig]

If your jeep is throwing a code for a faulty sensor, you can save the big bucks at a shop for diagnostics by following this easy process to figure out what is wrong with your jeep. 91 through 97 (verified, possibly works with newer too) models only.

Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on,
off, on, off, on. (On is not start!)

The "check engine" light will flash. Count the flashes
Each code is a two digit code, so a (for example) 23 would be
FLASH FLASH---FLASH FLASH FLASH

It will never flash more than 9 times, watch for pauses!

55 is end of codes, 33 is normal if you dont have air conditioning.

Please note that some codes are NOT included below, this
is not a complete listing, but it IS very close to complete.

88 Start of test (This only appears on DRBII, it's not blinked out)

Thanks for all the input. I changed the O2 sensor. I could never locate that little timer box so I just pulled the bulb.[addsig]
