Lower steering shaft repair

I'm pulling apart the lower steering shaft bell shape
part,,, no clip,, to spead out square keys. How did this stay together??? I have a new complete shaft
and I bend the clip when trying to assemble. Ordered new clip and suggestions , I 'm scared this will not stay together when I'm done ???

can you post a picture? I have to agree that when I did my first one I thought the same thing, but it does. A picture would let us know it is together correctly. Im not sure if it will even go together incorrectly.
