loss of power / could it be fuel system problems?

I am experiencing loss of power, sometimes so significant that I cannot go over 25 miles per hour. The 1984 6 Cylinder CJ7 will just start to run rough, and then totally lose power. If I downshift and get the RPMs up, I can pick up speed, but then once I hit 45 or so, it starts to choke down the power again. It is very spurradic, and unpredictable as to when it will happen, but it is getting much more frequent and unreliable. It seems to happen often when I am going up even the slightest incline or hill.

I had the engine totally checked out, and all is well mechanically and electronically. The engine is new with only about 700 miles on it. I'm thinking that I have a fuel issue. Could it be the pump, carbeurator, filter - help?[addsig]

Does it sputter and die or is it more of a miss? Have you changed you fule filter and checked your air filter. Is the carb original or after market and has it ever been rebuilt? It does not do this all the time? How long has it been doing this? I wish I had an answer just post more information and someone will have an answer! Best of luck Tug[addsig]

sounds like a fuel/timing issue. Those can be hard to track down sometimes, but I would also check your wires/distributor as well if they haven't been checked already. My Jeep was doing about the same thing as you describe and it turned out to be the wires arcing across each other.

Just another idea to throw into the pot with the others...[addsig]

Tug,

It does not seem to be acting like a miss, it just dies out. It totally just loses power and does not have the ability to maintain speed. It is pretty weird. It does not shut down totally, just loses power until I downshift into a lower gear, get the RPMs up, then it will "come back to life"; temporarily.

I have not checked any filters personally. I don't know abou tthe carb as I bought the vehicle 2 years ago. I know I haven't done anything to the carb personally.[addsig]

Man ,get a ignition control box. All jeepers should carry a spare anyway. It fits on he drivers side fender . When it goes out , it doesn't always quit totally. Mine done the same thing yours is doing . When it would start acting up I pulled over and changed the box, and it fixed it. You don't have to mess with the bolts and all to check it. I jut unplugged the old one and plugged the new one in. It started up and ran fine , so I drove it home this way and bolted it down the next day.

Hope this helps,

Jackal
