"Loping" engine

I have an 83 CJ-7 with a straight 6 (258ci) that lopes when I first start it in the morning. The RPMs go from 450 up to about 900 when it is cold and then eventually (after a few minutes idling like that) it levels out to about 450. If I try and rev the engine, at times it will "cough" back through the carburetor and even die if I push the issue by accelerating. Also recently the automatic choke doesn't seem to be working anymore. I am not sure if the two things are related, but it is really starting to annoy me.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

the choke is an easy fix so give that a stab 1st thing. your backfire is probably due to the non functioning choke and a cold engine. but to be sure eliminate the one 'known" problem and then see how it runs and go from there.

Thanks for the tip about the choke. I suspected as much, but wanted to get an expert's opinion before messing with it.
