Looking for a certain cherokee...

I'm trying to help my dad find a cherokee, we have looked at a couple but both have had only 4Hi and 4Lo... no 2Hi. My dad would like to get one that has a 2hi in the tcase. What year and model should I be looking for?

Oh and another question, which xj is the one with only 2 doors? I have seen pictures but again don't know what to look for specifically.

Some XJ sport models were two door... 4-door is more common.

There are two transfer cases in the older cherokees:

NP242 = Full time T-case aka "select-trac" - Don't know much more about it.

NP231 (later NV231) = Part time T-case aka "command-trac" Found in most older and newer cherokees, has shifting positions: 2HI, 4HI, Neutral, 4LO. (The 231 case was made by New Process, now called New Venture. Depends on what model year Jeep you buy.)

I have a 95 Cherokee Sport w/ 4wd- it has the T-case u are looking for. you can buy the 2 door model- i wanted to, but having 4 doors is prolly the best thing since sliced bread. without it, id have to pull the seat to get back there and all that shit... seriously unless you want an offroad only vehicle then get 4 doors

the selec-trac t-case has 2wd, 4hi part time, 4hi full time, 2 lo.... i dont know of any that dont have 2wd.. you sure you were looking at it right? the cherokee sport came in 2 door, i had a friend who had one.. was a pain in the a$$ to get to the back seat tho.

question.. was the t-case shifter a lever on the floor or pushbutton on the dash? if its electric shift (dont think jeep used this, but could be wrong) there would only be 4hi and 4lo buttons... each with a light.. if both lights are off you're in 2wd. hit 4hi to shift into 4hi, 4lo then to go to 4lo, 4lo to go back to 4hi, 4hi to go back to 2wd... hope this makes sense. my mazda had elecrtic shift on the t-case and thats how it worked. there was no 2wd indicator.

the only type of jeep they make without 2WD is the GRAND cherokee (and maybe the liberty, but i'm not sure), because its available with a "quadratrac" (or something to that effect) transfer case. unfortunately, they did make cherokees with ONLY 2WD... but isn't that just the stupidest idea ever? anyways though, maybe you were just looking at the cherokees wrong... cause i'm almost positive they all have 2WD, and i also know they were never made with an option to shift electronically.
