Lift, tires, and rims too big?

Howdy all a champ when it comes to engine trouble, but when it comes to lifts and tires I'm lost. I'm not really sure about what size lift I should get on my Yj. I just had the transmission rebuilt(5spd. 4cyl.) and a new clutch put in so I don't want to get something that is too big and tear up my fifth gear again. Can anyone tell me what size tires to get and biggest rims without messing up my trany.

do what you want as long as you gear up (pun intended) for it... seriously tho - if you stick to 32 or less for tire size you should be ok for the 4 cyl.... you'll never use 5th gear for the most part but it should be tolerable... i run 33's w/6cyl 4.2 and dont use 5th anymore but i'm gonna regear soon - your lift will determine your tire potential and that will set your gearing / rpm tolerance... search around - you'll find your answers! have fun!

Without re-gearing the axles it is difficult to say that any tire size increase would not be hard on your transmission. I would think you'd be safe with 31's.

Run Redline MT90 in that transmission. It will help. Whatever you do, avoid using GL5 oil in it.

I got a 95 yj with a 4cly and 33s and it is not that bad , 2in bl and shackels are bigger.

I had a 94 with the 4 cyl. running 31 BFG'S. Like others have stated, it worked, but 5th gear is useless.

I've got a '94 with a 4 cyl and I'm running 31" mudders, and I use 5th gear all the time with no problems.......

Depending on how strong your motor is, if you have any performance mods, and what kind of terrain you're driving on either of these two results could ring true.

I ran 32's on a 4 cyl YJ ('92) and cruised in 5th gear quite a bit. It often needed downshifting on hills though ;)

Hills? What are those? Seriously, though, just climbing an overpass isn't enough to reqire me to downshift, but get into real hills like eastern KS or MO or AR, and yeah, I'll be in 4th quite a bit. A really strong headwind of 20mph or more may require that I hit 4th occasionally, too, but for the most part, 5th works very well.......

whats the most common gear ratio, here on the board? im turnin 31's with a 3.08 stock gear ratio. AND I HATE IT. with the 31's the final ratio is like 2 sumthin....rediculous!!!

im prob gonna change out this summer.

My YJ was a 4 cyl, which all had 4.10 gears. With your gear ratio, I would expect it to be bad. Why don't you re-gear?

Running 31" tires and no lift works fine for me, aside from rubbing fender flares on heavy bumps. I was able to use 5th gear behind the 4cyl. to maintain highway speeds unless I came to any type of incline. The transmission did not like it though and blew up on me last summer. So...gear your axles lower or replace your transmission if you plan on any tire taller than stock.
