Re: my heep

hey, i dont know much about lifts except body lifts because there plain and simple. Would someone care to take the time to explain what all the lifts are and what is the best way to go for offroad use.

suspension... new springs will lift the vehicle

body... lifts the body from the frame

shackles.... bring the leafs away from the frame

coil spacers... bring the coils away from the frame

with J Higgins hard at work, and Utah Jeeper around, I've been hearing alot about long arm lifts...I'm not that familier with these myself, so if I can getsome info on them, I would appreciate it.

With a TJ you have the option of going to a "long arm suspention lift".
What an long arm lift really is , is a lift designed to replace your lower control arms on your front and rear diff. During this replacement you have to cut and grind off the front control arms bracket from your frame. The kit replaces this with a center mounted rail that attaches to your frame and provides a new location to mount these arms. The longer arms provide a smoother ride inside the Jeep. I could explain the mechanics of this but the best way is to tell you. Step outside with a basketball and bounce it on the ground very hard with your arm and over the top.... the jaring or your body and arm is like your jeep over your short arm suspention. now take the ball and bounce it at arms lenght...your arms pivotal movement from your shoulder reduces your bodies impact with the ball. This is the same case with a long arm suspention on and off road. they take alot of the harsh suspention movements and reduce the kenetic energy transfered into the cab. There are pros and cons of this lift for coil type suspention. The arms are longer and more vunerable to high center damage, they require you to spend alot at first to set it up. Since they move more off road the bushing's wear at a faster rate and require your constaint vigual to maintain it during monthly inspections. Replacement parts are again on the pricie side. But a smoother ride in hard off roading situations like rock crawling and point blank with a 4 inch lift and 35's I dont get that sevier cab bounce driving the freeways you alway have with lifted 4x4's. I went tera-flex since there located here in Utah and I could call with all my dumb questions. There is a good picture of there show truck and you can see what it looks like. Hopfully J Higgins will have pics of installing his lift and finish products and will be willing to give us a better write up with having both a short arm suspention (stock) and the ride with his new long arms afterwards

good way of putting it Utah...

when you lift so much with coil suspension, the control arm moves toward vertical... and eventually has no range for the axle to move up and down, but will actually try to move it forward and back... and the tracbar will fight that... that makes for one hell of a hard ride.... the long arm kit will relocate that control arm back to a more horizontal position, which will allow the axle to move more easily up and down
