Liberty latch

I have an 05 Liberty and all of a sudden, the only way to release the rear hatch glass is with the button on the key. Any ideas on why the mechanical lock/release isn't working and what the fix might be?

maybe the linkage inside the tailgate broke or came undone. take it apart and see if its all hooked up

Yep, check the linkage. There's an acess panel on the passenger side of the rear hatch door panel. You can reach in there or remove the entire panel to see if the linkage came undone.

OK, I opened the access plate in the tail gate and NO linkage! By feeling around I was able to locate the wiring running from the gate handle to the rear glass solenoid and it must have been loose because something clicked and now it works fine. So it looks like at least some '05 Liberties have an all electric circuit to the rear glass release and mechanical only for the gate latch itself. But thanks for giving me a good starting place to find out what was wrong

Go to a local dealership and see if there's a recall on your rear hatch glass switch. All KJ's have an electronically actuated rear glass release and mechanical actuated door. There is a micro switch in there that causes the glass not to release.
