Hey everyone! I really need some help with my liberty. Every time I take my foot off the gas pedal it kills. Sometimes it starts back up and sometimes it has to be towed. Its been to the dealership and 2 other mechanics and none of them can find a single reason it would do this. Has anybody else had this problem or can think of something that that none of them did I would greatly appreciate your help!!

Welcome to Jeepz. A Little more Information would be helpful. What Year is Your Liberty? HOW many miles on Jeep? Has Jeep had a Recent Tune-up? When the Liberty dies--- does it show a Check Engine Lite? There are a number of things that could be the culprit. Might NEED the Throttle Body Cleaned!? Might need tune-up. Could be Spark or Fuel ? The Check Engine Lite (Codes) is a Key piece of Information.? --- JB

It's a 2002 with 170000 miles on it. They cleaned the throttle body, checked for vacuum leaks. They've tested sensors and the fuel pump. The codes that come up, which I can't remember off hand, have to do with emission leaks. The Jeep dealership mechanic told me to keep driving it and it would eventually do something drastic and then they would better know what to fix. Personally I don't find that as the best idea but it might just be me. They also checked the fuel regulator.

So--- The Liberty is 10 years old with 170K on the clock! Have you Recently bought this liberty? Any Idea. HOW it was maintained the last 10 years? Also, If You could come UP with the OBD Codes --- It might guide us in the Right direction? Has the JEEP had a recent Tune-up? PLUGS? With this Mileage on the Jeep -- a Number of Issues couild cause: Stalling -- Poor Idle: 1. Was the Throttle Body thoroughly cleaned -- and the Throttle Plate Checked to Insure it was seating properly? 2. Has the IAC been checked?? Insure IAC motor is functioning Properly? 3. Check connections on: PCM and IAC Motor (insure GOOD electrical connections). 4. Check for Restricted Air Intake -- Is the AIR FILTER New? Check for a collapsed AIR Intake Duct-- NO foreign Objects? 5. Check ALL Vacuum hoses. (Leaks)--- EGR Valve OK? 6. Ignition Coils and Plugs --OK? 7. Check for Intermittent Sensors -- Crank. And Cam Position sensors? 8. IAC passage Clean and no restrictions? 8. PCV valve correctly Installed? Comments?? -- JB

I bought the Jeep in 2004 when it had 20000 miles on it. With 3 mechanics and a very long list of computer print outs that were all in the Jeep I regret I wasn't able to list them off for you, however, I can assure you that all of those items were checked 3 times. The first diagnosis was to change the gas cap, the second was to check the O2 sensors and nothing else presented itself on the diagnostic. Unfortunately the Jeep caught on fire on the way home from mechanic #4 so it is no longer a problem.

It sounds like you did it the RIGHT way when you Purchased this Jeep ! You definitely did your Homework. As you have had the Liberty since 2004. --- Has it been fairly reliable ? (Few problems?) How bad was it. -- when it caught on fire? Major damage? What do you mean: It is no longer a problem? As you see from the List I Posted --- ANY number of things --- can cause this particular problem... With. 170K miles on the clock it becomes a little bit tougher -- That is WHY I asked HOW the Vehicle was maintained. Does the Jeep use ANY Oil--between Oil Changes? --- JB

It was very reliable until coming home from a New Years Eve party when the water pump blew out . After that it seemed to be on a downward spiral. I have never had a problem my mechanic couldn't fix as he has worked on my cars for 25 years. I drove that Jeep to California, Maine and Florida more than a few times so its definitely been driven through everything. The fire spread all the way to the dash and singed the seats so we will see what the insurance company says tomorrow, however, I would say its a total loss. So onto the dealership sites I go to purchase a new vehicle. I loved my Jeep but I didn't love the gas mileage.

Good Luck with your search for another Vehicle! If it is a Total loss--- will you buy Another JEEP? It sounds like your Liberty gave you some Great service. The Liberty was suppose to be the Jeep with GOOD MPG! JB
