larger Alternator?

Help TwistedCopper pick a tire - PLEASE!

I got a 76 I6 engine and that alternator just doesn't have enough amps. I found out the early 80's had a optional larger one, but this won't fit since its larger around. My question is will the alternator bracket from a 80's I6 fit on mine? Also where both alternators that same size or do I need the brackets off of one with the larger alternator? Thanks for your help if anyone knows.

Those won't work. I says in a note: This increase output at speed but lower it at idle which may cause your light to flicker and Idle. At idle is the time I need the extra power. I have and eletric fan conversion and it doesn't run while you crusing down the highway. Looks like A good idea just won't work in my case. Thanks for looking though.... Anyone have any other Idea?

Hey there... I was in the same situation a little while ago. TFI upgrade, Blazer motor, fog lights were draining too much on my stock alternator. I got a 160 amp model off ebay from a guy named motor city reman or something like that. I would recommend that guy. His ad said it puts out 70 or 80 amps at idle, which was better than other high output alternators on ebay claimed. I didn't want to try the jcw rebuild kit for the reason that you posted, even though bounty and others say it works well, and I didn't have 300 bucks for a mean green. It showed up pretty quick and was a direct bolt in. I haven't had it on for too long and haven't driven it more than a few miles because I have been doing other stuff, but I can turn everything on at idle and the voltage gauge still shows 14V. That was not the case before. Let us know what you end up doing.

I Looked at the mean greens but I didn't find one for a 76 engine. Besides that is allittle bit more expensive than I would like. I would rather put two altenators on it first. Which I am thinking about. I don't have power steering so I might be able to modify the bracket to hold an anternator. Anyone know about the stock alternator brackets for the 80's engines?
