K&N Drop in Filter

I bought one of these things for the Jeep when it was new back in Oct 04. Is it time to clean it yet?

Three years?! haha yeah wouldn't hurt... especially if you get it dirty from wheelin'. You're lucky, I have to clean mine every 4-6 months.

3 years...wow..I never let my K&N's go more than 6 months without cleaning them, These filters rely on the oil droplets to capture and hold the dust particles. This oil is only really good for 3-6 months and must be cleaned off and replaced per the instruction on the K&N filter service kit.

For those you that have them and clean them a lot.. you ever notice you end up wth a lot more cans of oil than you do cleaner?

^^^ You must get the recharger kits instead of buying the big cans/bottles of oil. I buy mine at a local speed shop - it's a little bit more expensive, but it's nice to have the big spray bottles of cleaner instead of the little pump cans that come in the recharger kit.

You guys ever accidently put on way to much oil? The bottles of oil are aggravating trying to get just enough on without overdoing it and causing your filter not to be able to breathe. Think the spray cans are better?

Ooops...to be perfectly honest the Jeep is an 04 model but I bought it in Oct 03. So, the filter is actually about 4 years old. Not helping my case much am I but to be fair I only have 28,000 miles on her. I know I should have cleaned it earlier and I had even ordered the charging kit when I ordered the filter but it was just one of those things that I kept putting off.

It seems to run better now that it's clean.

Geez, I've even put a pre-filter on mine.

I clean mine all of the time. At least at the beginning and at the end of the Colorado trail driving season...

I clean mine every two or 3 trail rides. It ends up looking like a brown booger due to all the dust we get on the trails.

Out here we have rocks, not so much dust. You know, basket ball sized ones. All over most of the trails.

Some of the t-t-trails get q-q-quite t-t-tiring before you-you-you g-g-get off of them!

I'm sure you have dirt roads between those trails.
We have dust on top of our dust. Then it rains and turns to mud for about 10 minutes then back to dust. It's great.

Basket ball sized rocky trail...

Did do one dusty trail recently. Red Elephant Hill outside of Downyville. Soft shouldered dust. Turned a corner and felt the Jeep slide softly to the passenger side. You know that feeling of gravity shifting from underneath you to your side? Well I felt like I was going to tip over.
Turned up the hill and gunned the engine and pulled out of the tip!

The one dusty trail in Colorado! (and even it had huge rocks in it)
