is this trouble?

Just noticed on my recently purchased 92 4.0 that the oil dipstick has some rust/grit on it. The quick lube sticker says the next change should be 145K, it now has almost 142K which is why I didn't think to check it before.

For my other vehicles (Fords, Honda) they always say 3K miles or 3 months between changes.

What could cause this? I'm thinking I should go ahead and change it again anyway, I don't have any manuals yet- is it 6 quarts exactly? Is 10W30 ok?
That's what's on the Shell quick lube sticker.
Thanks.

So i've read that i should check the CCV first. My understanding is that it is the hose at the rear of the valve cover leading to the exhaust ma.
How exactly do i check and /or clean it?

well if your unsure of the oil i would go with thw 10w but incase they were using synthetic do another in about 100k and well as far as how far between ill stick to every 4-5000 k keep the engine clean and free of varnishes.rust on the dipstick is a sure sign of condensation usualy formed because of short distance driving keep up on the oil changes and add a couple extra miles on those trips to the beer store ,Oil in the air filter ?Ive owned a few jeeps now and every one of them had loads of oil in the air filter.

KEEP ON JEEPIN

RE: Got in an Accident

A CCV is in the same place that you would find a PCV, but instead of it being a valve, its just a small orifice. Make sure the orifice is not clogged, ie you feel a vacuum there when its running. Be careful, the plastic can get brittle. I broke my buddy's pulling it off once and I could only get a new one at the dealer. Not as cheap as it looks.

Your CCV is likely clogged, causing crankcase pressure to build and force oil into the valve cover. The CCV system is basically working in reverse.

Find the line from the valve cover to the airbox, it should be sucking air into the valve cover with the engine running. If it's not, the CCV is running in reverse. Check for a clog or collapsed line in the vacuum line from the intake manifold into the valve cover. This line has a small orifice that is easily clogged.

my engine was/is leaking oil and I had originally asked if anyone knew a good mechanic on another more local forum (mjr) and someone put up a few links about if i had oil in my air filter, so i went through the ccv check (i have some general pictures).

maybe the links below might help you out a little in respect to that :?: (they are from a cherokee site).

oil in the air filter

other stuff to check

:)

blowby oil to engine compartment, valve cover interior, dipstick, etc.

CURE:

Replace PVC filter and line and reinstall fresh one with an additional one in rear or front of valve cover, wherever there is room on the top of the cover. This is normal 4.0, 4.2 behavior, and no harm.

---------------------------------------------------

Rust oil, dirt and crap on disptick.

CURE:

Clean and/or replace with new disptick--this too is normal

Re: RE: winches

Change the dipstick (or clean it real well), Check the PVC, CCV and all the hoses, etc., and then change the oil. All should be good after that.

My Jeep had some major blow-by and after I did those things...all was good.

RE: Got in an Accident

Thanks a lot guys, seems this is a very common problem. Eases my mind somewhat to know this. Some people say it's the rings (rebuild!), but I don't have any smoke and it seems to be running fairly smooth.

I did change the oil even though the sticker says it's good for 3K more miles, it looked very dirty to me. I suspect the previous owner had it changed right before selling it and it had been mostly sitting, and possibly not have had the oil changed often enough.

Should I replace the whole CCV system or just try to clean it? Any advice on how to clean, what to use, etc.?

RE: WANTED JEEP LIFT

I cleaned the line from the valve cover to the manifold, it was full of crap. Hopefully that's what the problem was. I'll keep an eye on it.
Thanks again. :D
