I have a m20 rear end in my cj7 and was wondering how it stacked up is it a decent rear end or should i consider gettin some d44's (i know there tough as a backwoods coon dog) i know the d44 are awsome but i was curious about the m20 also...

Good for what?
Mine was good for everything but riding on.
Seriously, you can put some one piece shafts in it and run 33's without problems. Some people truss the housing.
A Dana 44 would be good up to some 35's maybe 36's depending on how you drive it.
I wouldn't spend more than the price of a one piece axle kit on it because it is doubtful that you can recooperate any more than that if you sell it and upgrade.
I personally would take a Ford 9" over the Dana44 if you decide to upgrade.

I am running the amc 20 with 1 piece axles and an axle truss. I think it will be good for 35's. I havent had any problems with my 33's. And I just love to push the skinny pedal. :D

An axle may last forever under one rig and not hold up to one good launch under another. It depends on you more than anything. I've run 39s on an AMC M20, I've also broke one with 31s. A set of Moser shafts and a good full length welded truss will fix the only two real problems that axle has.

Run it like you stold it then when and if you break it up grade to some thing better. tug

When putting mine together I decided to experiment and leave the 20 under it. Threw disc brakes on it, one piece axles, trussed it, and welded the tubes. I'm running 34's on it behind a 350 and so far........................I'm not gonna say it.

Get some GOOD one piece axles (superior gear or moser) and you should be fine. If you are running 33's or bigger a truss is a good idea if you wheel it at all. I spun 4 2 piece axles before upgrading to 1 piecers and no problems since. a buddy of mine is running a 351 with 4 barrel, headers, high perf intake etc and he's got 35's with the 2 piece axles and hasn't had a problem yet. He's heavy on the skinny pedal and even did a monster truck rally over 3 parked cars in a parking lot one night (too many beers) but no problems from his stock AMC 20. If it aint' broke, don't fix it. If it does break, try the 1 pieces and you should be fine.....

I can't agree more. Moser would be my first choice but the I don't see anything wrong with the Superior kit either.

I've got one that I couldn't break no matter what I did. I figured since I was swapping it out anyway.....why not hear it go boom first? At least a little POP or something  I tried to the point I was scared I was going to break something else before it let go. I could pretzel it if it had a locker, but with an open diff it just would not break
