Is it possible?

... to drive my YJ with a different ratio in the front and back?
Before anyone yells "NO YOU DUMB@$$" to me let me explain...
I have a stock 3.07 in both axles right now, but I will be buying a D44 for the rear this week for my upcoming SOA project.
I will be doing the soa myself and in the process installing the D44 while keeping the D30 in the front. The D44 has a 3.55 ratio in it.

I will NOT be changing any gears for either axles, I'll leave that to the pros.

So now I have to get it TO the pros...
If I install the rear with the different ratio than the front, can I drive it to my mechanics so he can put my new 4.56s in? I was thinking as long as I didn't put it in 4wd I may be okay. OR I could just take the front driveshaft out just to be safe.
Are either of these options possible? I would rather not take the front shaft out since its more work, but...

If it's not possible than I can always have it towed up to my mechanics...
thanks for any ideas

the front ratio will have nothing to do with anything as long as you keep your hand off that short shifter

dont worry about it unless, juss dont put it in 4 wd. mines been like that for over 6 months and in the mudd it actually helps me a little better with 3.55 in the front and 3.73 in the rear, it helps me steer better. just dont put it in 4wd on hard ground and youll b fine

Hey jeepin916,
So you CAN put it in 4WD but ONLY in mud? Strange...
Oh and I noticed your ratios there... does the carrier size change when you hit 3.73? I am currently in the market for a D44 but I could only find one that has a 3.55 ratio in it, so now I'm wondering if I have to change carriers too. Thanks

hey im not sure if the carrier changes. i tore off the lower control arm mount off the fron diff and instead of gettin it welded i bought a used axle, so i havent messed with the inner gears. what i heard was that any 3.55 and higher the carrier is different, i over heard that in a shop but im not sure. if you wna tto b certain call up a place that sells gears and tell them you want to buy gears and ask if the carriers need to b changed they will usually tell you the truth if they think your going yo buy stuff off of them

yea also the only reason that u can use different ratios in the mud is becouse you have plenty of tire slipage with out tire slipage you would have drive line binding becouse, in my case, 3.55 gears will trun faster than my 3.73. too much drive line binding, or wind-up as some people call it, can dammage ur transfer case..
