97 cherokee....commin hometonight, i pressed down the pedal on the highway, to merge lanes, shes at like 4k rpms....all the sudden BEEEEEEEP check engine light comes on, and temp gauge just turns off, so im real close to home, but i have a stop light, well she now idles at a little over 1k rpm, usually 750, well im like thank god she didnt die or soemthing....yet, well i get in the driveway pop the hood, take a peek, and its runnin, but not very steady, so i cut it off, let it sit for a good 15 minutes, go to start it...nothin she turns and turns, but no go, so i try to crank and give gas....this works but as soon as i let off the gas, it just tumbles to a stop again.......the error code is 22 which is coolant temp sensor...big woop, wonder did i screw somethin else up thats vital to the engine when she was up at 4k rpm??? NO CAR FOR WORK TOMMAROW sh!t PLZ HELP[addsig]

Jeep has changed it´s computer setup (concessionare) a few times in the XJ series. I´m not real familiar with the newer models (post 93). But most systems won´t run open loop (with the sensor package) until engine temp. reads 140 F. The high idle sounds normal for closed loop (pre-programmed) start and cold run, but then the low idle you mentioned doesn´t. Probably conflicting signals in the system and the computer doesn´t know what to do. My first two checks when the engine idle changes in the older models, is to disconnect the battery for awhile and the reboot the system. The second is to disconnect the O2 sensor and see if the idle changes.
Might try and disconnect the temp. sensor and see what happens, could be shorted instead of a open circuit (check the fuse). In some early models the temp. gauge sensor and the temp. sensor for the computer where two different sensors.[addsig]

ok its fixed, i managed to get it up to the stealer...i mean dealer early this mornin and let them handle it, talked with the mechanic that fixed it, he says that it was the coolant temp sensor (the wire that goes to your thermostat housing) and that that computer thought it was getting too much voltage which in turn means that the engine is too cold..go figure, especially when this happend at 4 thousand rpm..anyways, the print out i got says "Performed Scan Test, cleared engine temperature code, reset idle air control motor and restested"...which basically means they got $91.40 from me...ohwell shes back in business now...just thought id give yall an update[addsig]
