Hydraulic Winch + Stock Power Steering pump = Weak pull

Hey Guys.

Here is my challenge. I installed a Mile Marker HI12000 on my 95 YJ 2.5 and it is weak. The specs on the winch say I need 3.5 GPM @ 1500 psi at minimum to work the winch. I have an old stock power steering pump and am not sure what volume or pressure it is running.

Looking for some direction.

  • Where can I find the specs on the stock PS pump?
  • Can I install a different power steering pump with the volume & pressure needed?
  • What PS pump would you recommend?
  • Do I need to install a Thumb Throttle to keep the motor at a higher RPM when winching?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Jay

Thanks wwch99tj.

I will look into that pump and pulley.

I think I will also add a thumb throttle to bring the RPMs up when winching.

No problem. someone else might might chime in with some other options also...

Def get a stronger pump. I was looking for a winch at one time and read a article from JP magazine where they were doing a shoot out between the hydraulic, elecric winches to see which would pull better. The hydraulic pulled better and longer but they burnt up the power steering pump and went through two or three of them during this test. during one of their tests, the pump went out half way up a hill and they were stuck. I would Put some type of pump cooler on it (trany cooler) to help.
