How do ZJs compare to XJs in terms of offroad capabilites?

personally, I think ZJs are better for 2 reasons:

1. 4 wheel coil spring - gives a smoother ride on & off road and offers more flex. I ride with a 99 XJ all the time. I always have to slow down because he's bouncing around too much and I hardly feel it.

2. 4 wheel disc brakes - again better both on & off-road - especially on rocks and hills.

i'm a zj owner, i wouldnt necessarily say they're better. my roommate has an xj, he's got a 3 inch lift, i've got a 2 inch lift and we both have the same exact 31" tires. most of the things he can make it through, i can make it through as well, however, he does have better ground clearance, so that helps him in areas. (he's also got a winch) but another thing i noticed is that his is minimally smaller, but in tight trails, it becomes very noticeable.

i say, to each his own, xj's probably have more parts out there for customization. but each can be just as capable as the other if they're built right. and even bigger, driven right, the driver is infinately important.

Friends with problems...

ZJ's and XJ's are basically the same.
Sure, ZJs have the coils. But, I am more of a leaf person.
ZJ's have smaller wheel wells and cannot run as big of a tire, without shelling out for a bigger lift.

my rule is that how good a rig is off road depends on 2 things:
1. DRIVER SKILL
2. MONEY SPENT ON THE RIG

(I emphasize on #1)

(Take me for example. I beat a 1998 Chevy with 9" lift and 37 MTRs with my stock 01 XJ with M/T 235's in mud bogging. And it was NOT a tiny bog)

uhh... you have that backwards. the ZJ has larger wheel wells, and as such can run larger tires without as much lift. We had to lift my friend's 99XJ 2" to get 30's to clear properly. My 95 ZJ handles them stock just fine. I could fit 31's on the ZJ without a lift, and would only rub when cornering - can't do that on an XJ.

I agree - driver skill is the biggest factor. Tires are #2, everything else comes after....

Like to see a pic of that

Depends how you build them - period.

The XJ's are cheaper to lift.

In stock form the ZJ may have a bit more ground clearance, but I am not sure.

The rear suspension on the ZJ being coils is not neccessarily an advantage. Leaf springs are more stable and do not require control arms, track bars, sway bars.

It is really more of a preferance. I bought an XJ for the simplicity of the rear and the lighter curb weight, not to mention they are both cheaper to buy and mod. I also like they way they look - but it really just a matter of preferance and either can be built to excellent offroad vehicles.

Oh, and both of them have relatively small wheel wells that require a substantial amount of lift to run a large tire. Cutting or aftermarket flares can help remedy that though.

Your'e right, they both hacve smaller wheel wells. Let me correct what I was saying. The ZJ has a NARROWER wheel well.
Compare them side by side and you might see what I am saying. I could be wrong, but its what I believe.
