my wife started her 1997 jeep cherokee sport 6cyl yesterday morning and it idled fine for about a minute, when it just started revving up on its own. It will go up as high as 3800-4000 rpms and back down to 1000 rpms, obviously she shut it off very quickly. Thinking that the IAC was bad/dirty i just replaced it, but that didn't fix it, so i moved on to the TPS i replaced it also and had the same results. There are no vaccum leaks that i can hear or see. The jeep was running great up until this happened, the check engine light is on but im afraid to drive it due to the high rpms. Please help, this has me baffled and any advice or maybe someone has had the same problem and can help me .

Pull the code and check. Have a wrangler, same year as yours, you can cycle the key on and off 3 times and your cel will flash a certain amount of times count that and the will be the 1st number the light will pause and then flash somemore again and that will be second number I.e. is one flash = 1, pause, two flashes= 2. That means 12. Give it a try and see what happens. I'm not sure if the Cherokee has this feature but it should since its a jeep.

Check that your intake and exhaust manifold bolts are torqued. They have a tendency to come loose and cause a high idle.
