high revs

tease

My husband and I both drive jeep cherokees but mine has decided to become very querky at times and try to take off on its own!

The engine starts reving high and if I'm at a stop it will lurch foreward ( its given a few other drivers a heart stopping moment) Other times when driving, the revs will slow right down as if the fuel isnt getting through.

has anyone any ideas on where our garage should be looking, he hasnt worked on many jeeps before and as its an intermittant problem the jeep always behaves its self when I do take it in!!!
Thanx

I had the same problem in a car a few years ago and it turned out to be a busted drivers side motor mount. When the motor lifted it pulled on the throttle cable and you get the picture. And yes it did made for some interesting stoplight moments.

Sounds dangerous, have you checked the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor), that could be it, the motor mount sounds like it could be the prob too, give us more info as you figure this one out. Good luck, JOE>

IAC (idle air control) motor mounted to the throttle body could be bad. Start with bench cleaning the throttle body and see if it helps, then replace the IAC motor if it doesn't.

I had that on my 90 XJ. Sometimes when you started up, the motor would scream with RPMs. Not good for a cold motor with all the oil in the pan.:(

I think if I remember, I cleaned the heck out of the throat of the throttle body with CRC. There is a lip of carbon that builds up on the wall where the butterfly rides..
I'll have to think a bit more if I had to do anything else.. anyway, hasn't done it in years since:-)

thanx, this gives him something to work from.
someone had mentioned the oxygen sensor maybe going belly up as well.
I'll keep you up on what happens

I got the jeep back from the garage yesterday and so far, fingers crossed, she is running like a dream!

I had the 2 oxygen sensors replaced ( which the mechanic hates me for now, seems they were a pain to do lol) and had a full fluid change done on her.

might be counting chickens here but she sounds alot healthier than before.....watch this space lol

thanks for all the suggestions everyone :-)

If o2 sensors gave him trouble he's the worst mechnic on the face of this planet. I've done everything from dropping my transmission to changing my o2 sensor to changing my oil and the o2 sensor was way on the easy end of that spectrum. And that's in my garage or my driveway with no special trainin or anything.

No doubt!!!!! O2 sensors are a breeeeeeezzzzzzzzeeee! I guess if you dont have any WD-40 it can be a pain in the a$$!!!

well quick update, she ran great for awhile but the last couple of days she's back to her old tricks:roll:

ok she doesnt lurch foreward as much as she did but she is running really rough when idling. Looks like another trip into the garage :(
