Help with the 4wd

hello i just bought a 04 jeep grand cherokee 4 x 4 how does the 4wd work on it likeou put it into 4 full time and 4 low and does the light on the dash come on i put it in part ime and the light on the dash said i was in 4 part time but when i put it in full time or low it dont and do you put the gear shift in N to switch the 4 wd from 2 to 4? and do you have to back up after you take it out of 4 wd to unlock the hubs or does it do it it self PLEASE HELP thank you

I'm guessing you have the NV242 t.case.
NV242 operating ranges are 2WD (2-wheel drive), 4x4 part-time, 4x4 full time, and 4 Lo.
The 2WD and 4x4 full time ranges can be used at any time and on any road surface.
The 4x4 part-time and 4 Lo ranges are for off road use only. The only time these ranges can be used on hard surface roads, is when the surface is covered with snow and ice. It's advisable that you Shift the trans to Neutral and the Veh. speed no more than 3MPH when shifting the t.case from 2wd hi to 4wd low.
