Help with '84 CJ7

So Ive always been a Jeep enthusiast but never owned a Jeep myself. But I did just recently purchase my first one. Its a 1984 CJ7 with the 2.5L 4 cyl.

I wouldnt consider myself a mechanic but I know the basics and am pretty handy with motors. The motor is running pretty well but sounds like its backfiring/missfiring a little bit. Can you help me out?? Any suggestions?

Also, I was wondering what kind of gas mileage I could expect to get out of this motor? Just curious...

And any other random tips or bits of advice are always welcome.

Thanks

First question, how old is the ignition wires, cap and rotor and what's the condition of the spark plugs. Other components to consider is the PCV valve, fuel filter and carbon build up in the carb..Also check all the vacuum lines for cracks.

The ignition wires and everything you mentioned were replaced recently. I havent had much time to tinker with it yet. The vacuum lines look a little dry rotted but Im planning on replacing them anyway. The seller said the carb was recently cleaned but Im going to take a look myself.

One more thing. The shifter has a lot of play in it. Whats the best way to go about fixing it?

Just a note about your carb.. I jave a 82 Cj7 with the stock BBD on it and have already had to pull the idle tubes out twice in 9 months to clean them because it would soundlike it was misfirring at idle. I understand this is a common issue with these.

No BBD on the 4 cyl. It's 1 bbl (I have one in my for sale pile) Is the dist on the driver's side or passenger's side? (driver's side dist is late model GM motor. Pass side is early GM or AMC 4 cyl)

Mixed up plug wires? Intake manifold loose/sucking air? Timing off?
