Headlight switch smokes!!! This cant be good..

Alright my extended family. Just need some feedback. When I bought this 81CJ7, I would turn the lights on and after about a min. I would see small amounts of smoke coming from the switch area. (throughthe hole the clock should be) No prob, I said. Just get a new switch right? Seems to work ok now however my question is..... Is this a common piece to replace? They are all over EBAY real cheap. When I took the old one out, (part DS-216) the connection with the letter "H" has burn marks on it. That connects to a red wire. Not sure what "H" means or where that wire goes but I assume its a power wire of some sort. Has this happened to you? Is this a part to stock up on because its common? Just checkin. Bry

Seen it happen. You need to replace the connector and a section of the wiring harness along with the switch.

If yours is like mine, a '78, the headlight switch is a Ford unit. Perhaps you could find one out of a wrecking yards' Ford truck to run as a test unit.
