bad news=engine is shot

good news=now its time for fuel injection

well on my way to work this morning pulling into choice for a pack of camels my jeep lost all of her power and started smoking. pull the dipstick and there is antifreeze on it. look in the radiator, white foam. so im thinking its a headgasket or cracked cylinder wall or something. rather than replace the 258 i might as well throw in the 4.0. does anyone know of any good writeups, or does anyone have any tips for this swap for me to keep in mind. im gonna take my time and do it right. i still have my sammie to drive while i am doing this swap so i dont need to rush this. any input is appreciated. oh yeah its a 1990 wrangler.

thanks

whatever you get a 4.0 from... get EVERYTHING with it... get the motor, transmission, tcase, all sensors, computer, good radiator, everything... this way, you aren't trying to fab anything up to match for the swap...

Your best bet, If you can find a totaled jeep that still run and "yard drives" pay the extra money, buy that. Gaurenteed everything. plus some. My uncle did this when the motor went in his 86 chevy. bought a totaled yard drive 95 and swapped everything. also got new seats, wheels and tires, and other stuff. So much easier

great

You probably blew the head gasket. The motor may not be trashed. Since you are going to build a motor or swap then how about building a "Stroker." I can't give you all the technical stuff on it, but there are plenty of writeups. Do a search and see if it is feasible for you. They are torqy little monsters if done right.
I think you use a 4.0 block bored out, the 258 crank, oversized pistons and the 4.0 head (higher compression). You may find that it is a reasonable cost to performance ratio. Boring the block is not all that expensive and you need a few holes drilled and tapped for that head.

I knew someone had them.
I have overheard many conversations on doing this (from HESCO guys), but kind of tuned that out since I don't have that engine most of my buddys have converted to Chevys.
I have ridden in one Jeep that was stroked and it had an amazing amount of power. I think it would probably dust my 360 on the takeoff.
