General 4.0 question

One of the oil leaks from my engine is coming from the oil filter adapter. I was reading about how to fix it on cherokeeforum and everyone is saying it is a pain in the rear to change the o ring. My question is can i just take the adapter off and screw my filter onto the block, or do i have to have the adapter on there? I can post pics tomorrow if needed.

your oil pressure sensor might be threaded into that adapter but if you have no wires going to it, i don;t see why you couldn't.

why go they say its so hard? i thought it just unscrewed

the oil filter just screws onto the adapter, but the adapter has either a 9/16 allen key or a t-60 torx bolt holding it on. I was reading that some of the people on the other forum just removed it and everything is fine. they all have xj's though, but i don't see my zj being much different. there aren't any wires going to it that I can see. It also eliminates the possibility of the o rings going out later if i remove it, but when i do an oil change ill have oil running down the block and oil pan.

did you just take the adapter off and screw the filter straight on, or did you have to take the threads off the adapter and screw that into the block to screw the filter on

the on in my jeep points down, if i remember right.

screw it, let me go look and take a pic for you. i cannot be so lazy to not do that

ok, turns out i still have the adapter on so it must've been another motor i took it off of

Thats exactly what mine look like, except you have a lot more room to work. My frame is a couple inches off the 90* so it will be interesting to see how easy it is to fix.

If i remember correctly i modified a 9/16 alllen by cutting it to size and used a wrench to turn the allen piece on the adaptor. There's 2 o-rings on that adapter.
