front axle seal leak (pass.)

Hi,
Has anybody replaced a front axle passenger seal? What is involved. Is it hard to take the steering linkage off and the axle out? I noticed gear lube was coming out the passenger side....so you know I have a nice project ahead of me!

no need to undo the steering linkage... just remove the hub to get the axle out... do NOT use a puller to do so.. or you could be ending up spending $130 for a new one... back the bolts out about 3/16" and then pound them back in to loosen the hub.. you can also use a wedge-like tool. I think the seal is right near the shift fork... do whatever you have to do to remove it... if you're replacing it, it doesn't matter how bad you hurt it... then, when putting the new one in... try freezing it first, it will help contract the plastic to make it easier to put in... then get a piece of pvc pipe just narrow enough to fit right inside the axle tube.... use that to keep the seal pushed flat in the tube and to ensure a good seat

deal alert!!!

Try changing you gear oil in the front diff first, it may be contaminated with water and overfull, or the vent may be plugged causing the gear oil to blow past the seal when it expands.

When all else fails, replace the seal. When you pry the old one out, clean it up real good and you'll find a little series of numbers stamped in the metal. The parts store will use this number to help cross-reference to get the correct part.

Make sure the shaft is clean and free from corrosion where it contacts the seal.
