I currently have an 83 CJ7 frame which is in so good a shape that it could be considered mint. Since funds are limited to complete my CJ project...I cannot afford nore find a fiberglass tub I can afford....plus the CJ7 tubs seem hard to come by around these parts. I have however been able to get some very nice steel CJ5 tubs and an abundance of CJ5 fiberglass tubs and pretty cheap at times.

My question is this....and it may sound rediculous...but I just wonder if it can be done. Can you cut down a CJ7 frame to accomidate a CJ5 body tub? If so...can someone please tell me what is entailed. Thanks a bunch. By the way....I am new to this forum but am a mustang and bronco forum vet. Thanks in advance:shades:

anything can be done if you have the tools and skills
but by the time your done it will cost more in time and labor and supplies than to just go out and get the proper frame

I do have access to some wonderfull tools at the shop...and Im pretty good at welding...also I will have plenty of time this winter so those reasons wouldnt get in my way if it could be done without too many hitchs. The thing is...here in MEEchigan...I have yet to see a CJ frame worth doodly squat! The frame I currently have came from texas and is even clean inside the channel. So basically I guess I am willing to put in the work ....if it can be done...and it sounds like your saying it CAN be done?

That is strange, I can not find a cheap price on a fiberglass CJ5 tub. It seems around here, the CJ7's are more plentiful.

I have been looking for almost 2 years and have been willing to drive 300 miles to pick one up. Even drove all the way to Fort Wayne Indiana just to be dissapointed by the cracked up fiberglass tub that looked like it was dropped from a tree lol Where you at?

if you tried

you would find things like this

People lenghten, shorten, and repair frames all the time. I don't see why it would be too difficult if you had a cj5 body to measure off of.

Am leary about the JC Whitney glass tubs. (heard alot of bad things about twisting and cracking). There IS a guy 100 mile from me with a kevlar tub for sale......any thoughts on going that rought? Its a 7 and would eliminate the frame issue all together.
