Few questions I hope you all can answer

Ok first one:

I just recently got a 94 YJ and the battery cables were in terrible shape so I replaced them. When I took the vehicle out today it kinda surged on me and one time cut off completely. Ive been in more of a clean up and replace stage so I havent driven it much so im not sure if this is new or not.

What might be causing this?

Second question:

When I turn off the jeep there is a ticking noise that is coming from the engine compartment. The engine doesnt sputter or anything it just shuts off and the ticking noise can be heard.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Chanign the cables is a good thing. Just be sure your grounds are clean connected. I did some work and didn't tighten the ground lead and the jeep would just shut off whenever. There are other issues that cause the engine die but being you replaced the wires, I'd start there

By chance did you have this issue before changing the wires?

Ticking is likely the exhaust and heat shields cooling.

I dont remeber it happening before but then again I have not driven the vehicle that much besides the test drive and I dont recall it doing it then. I could be wrong.

Ill recheck my ground cable and clean the connections to be safe. If that doesnt work, ill start looking at others things.

Thanks for your help

I agree with verifying ALL of the grounds are clean, and connected to a CLEAN ground spot. I would not worry about the ticking, as stated above sounds like heat shields/exhaust cooling.

i agree check all grounds , make sure that the area where the grounds r placed at r clean and rust free make sure that when replaceing the ground cable u didnt accedently for get to put a wire back on allso

I'd like to echo what is posted above about grounds, the rust didn't begin on "Betty" until after I bought 'er and transported to this damp climate in which I live. After the first year corrosion began and how I attacked it was with those toothbrush shaped wire brushes for close in work, and a wire brush attachment on my drill for areas it would fit. after cleaning all the grounds (my bad ones were, dash panel, left headlight, and tail lights) and coating the finished assy. with diaelectric grease I've not had any problems since.
If you're not familiar, dielectric grease is a non-conductive, silicone grease designed to seal out moisture and, therefore, prevent corrosion on electrical connectors. Being non-conductive, it does not enhance the flow of electrical current. This property makes it an ideal lubricant and sealant for the rubber portions of electrical connectors. <~from Wiki

The ticking definitely sounds like the exhaust manifold and stamped steel heat shroud cooling. If it is, it is normal and harmless (wow, that sounds like something a dealer service writer would say on a warranty visit).

Did you replace the battery too? It is rare, but you could have a battery post that is busted in the battery case...this is rare but can happen if the battery is held in by the cables rather than a proper tie down.

"you could have a battery post that is busted in the battery case...this is rare but can happen"
I've heard this is especially true of Dual Post batteries
