Fan Clutch replacement

I am going to replace my fan cluth this weekend. It says to take the belt off is there a reason for this? I'm just wondering because it looks like the fan clutch bolts into the pulley. Or does the pully come off? Any light shed on this would be great before I jump into this. Thanks.

on my '90 XJ all i had to do was unbolt the fan clutch from the pulley and the whole thing popped out. had to remove the fan shroud too

not a tough job at all as long as you have all the basic tools you need.

I always forget year and such. its a 90 laredo with a 4.0. Thats what i figured the chiltons manual says to take the belt off but the fan clutch isnt even attached to that in any way. So if i could get around that tedious task and just unbolt the clutch and fan from the pulley that was the route i was going to take.

just to confirm, i did NOT have to remove the belt.... good luck with it.
