Exhaust question

I am fixing my sons 94 Wrangler that has the 2.5 L engine with an automatic transmission. Just had the transmission rebuilt, getting it regeared next week (whole nother issue). But while it was up on the lift at the transmission shop I saw that the exhaust looked like swiss cheese. I am replacing from the manifold back. The mechanics I talked to said by going a little bigger diameter pipe when replacing would give a little more power. My question, is there a mathmatical formula to figure out how big to go?
