Exhaust Me

24 hours to go! will this work?

I have a 1986 CJ7 with a hardtop, solid body, recently replaced total exhaust with Borla from headers back and I still smell exhaust in the jeep. Can anyone help?

are all the connections good and tight? can you see any leaking? the exhaust could be getting under the jeep once it comes out of the tail pipe is not long enough. the smeel of exhast while driving my jeep is normal and somewhat reassuring. however after spending money on a boral exhaust system i cant under stand while you can still smell it. carborated eng's are also more smeely than FI. Is the smeel strong? it must be better than the old exhaust was tho...

check the rear window gasket. If there is a leak the fumes from the tail pipe will seep in there and cause the smell. I added a gasket to the real window on mine and the problem was fixed. Also chcek your fire wall for any leaks there. tug

Thanks for all the help folks. The exhaust system itself is tight. I suspect it's my worn ACME top that is impossible to find parts for that is the problem. I will update as I get some progress.

A very common CJ problem. If the tail pipe isn't turned out between the left leaf spring and pointed out the side this can happen. Also during down shifting you can get the smell from the engine compartment through the air filter. Mine is horrible during down shifting. I have a open air filter AND a straight out the rear exhaust set up. It stinks!! Pun intended.

I took the headers off and ran factory manifolds to one pipe out the back. I hated those headers. They are pretty trick for the 6 bangers but the V8 fenderwell ones are terrible and loud too. They tend to kick up a lot of extra dust on the Alabama red clay trails in the summer. Very stealthy and low fumage now.

Am I understanding this correctly? Stock CJ7 exhaust pipe is supposed to exit the side behind the driver's side rear wheel and not straight back between the shackle and gas tank? Mine is straight back and man, it stinks.

Yup, the stock tail pipe is actually flattened about 10- inches and goes right between the leaf spring and the frame. It exits right behind the tire. facing at a little angle towards back. If your springs are lifted you don't need to worry about a flattened pipe.

Nice aroma huh?? Mine about fumes me out of the rig, top on/off/ windows open, shut, it doesn't matter. Just down shift and breathe deep. Hold breath till you have accellerated out of the intersection. Resume breathing as normal.

Mine has a 2 1/4 exhaust with a flowmaster and is sealed up tight. But' between the fuel injection probably running a tad rich and the pipe shooting out the back, I'll be dead soon.

Fumed out Jeep...........Yup I am a gonner.

Again I want to thanks everybody for their imput about my output. My Borla system bolts up with the tailpipe going thru the back leaf and out behind the rear tire. I know now once I can get the top sealed (will probably change it to fac jeep type since ACME parts hard to come by) the fumes will stay in check.
