Had this problem twice with two different rigs now.
You can find a manifold online for $119. or like YJ said, Ebay. It is a stainless steel aftermarket vs. the cast original. They have these funny little "flex" points on them that is supposed to counter the original design flaw, which was too much flex right at the bolts.
That mechanic is going with a factory replacement more than likely, which will only crack again. That is making up $4-$500 of the %850 you were quoted. It was a design flaw that was never corrected & was not "officially" acknowledged. There is/was a class action lawsuit out of California as this is a HUGE issue with 91-97 4.0's. I have since lost the link as I do not have that rig anymore.
I had several shops quote me around 300 to put in the aftermarket one. You do need to remove the intake as it is all mounted together.
My advice is go with the cheapo depot aftermarket. Worked well for me. Even if you have to replace it again in another 70K miles its still just the cost of the one you were quoted.
