everlasting junkyard paint

i busted my passenger rearview mirror on a trail, got a new one from a junkyard. they had tagged a "Z" on the mirror with something white. they said i'd come right off.... ive tried a strong cleaning solution, steel wool, brillo pads, OOPS!, and just about everything else that wont scratch it to pieces. any suggestions?

Have you tried lighter fluid? might sound weird but I've had some good luck with it before.

Good luck getting that stuff off.
I bought some to mark equipment in the field with and I got bored this weeked and took all of my fuel cans and marked the mixture ratios for the saws and different two strokes I have with that paint. I just had finished marking one of them and then when I was re-filling it with gas, it spilled right on the fresh paint.
I thought it would run for sure....no way. It held right there and set up hard even after being covered with gas less than 1 minute after putting it on.
That is some tenacious shuff.:!:

brake cleaner

And, how did you manage to not scratch it with steel wool?

when i used the steel wool i went lightly over the whole area, no results. so then i used my pointer finger in a glove and scrubbed pretty hard over exactly where the chalky looking paint is. no results.

i guess i'll try a mix of brake cleaner, goof off, and lighter fluid?

any other suggestions?

90Xjay - What was the name of the product you used? i'd like to contact them... maybe they can tell me what will remove it properly?

Oh, and whatever you use, try it on a little spot first where it can't be seen real easily...to test if it scratches or does anything else you don't want.

The product that everyone pretty much uses is Markal Ball Paint markers

There is no internet address for them but is says it is made at LA-CO Industries, 1201 Pratt Blvd, Elk Grove, IL
Hope that helps........

Don't know if you can get a hold of it, but we used this product called GraffitiGone when I was working for the city Parks and Rec department... Took off most any markings on playground equipment, buildings, and the like.

Were there any grandcherokees in the junk yard you were checking out. I am looking for a passenger side rear light assembly and I cant find one anywhere (outside of paying $300 for a new one)

judge, you can get them on ebay for about $40-60 (plus shipping), not the best solution, but like you said, better than paying $300 for a new one.

i emailed the company... but i'm scared to use their suggestion, as well as goof off

Dried paint can be removed with ethyl alcohol or methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Both will damage plastic.

Steve"

could i just tape off the entire mirror except where the "Z" is, and hope it wont leave a gray spot in the center?

Have you considered getting a poly spraypaint and spraying both of the mirrors?
