engine light

2000 XJ, 64K miles. Engine light came on today. Nothing wrong (nothing obvious anyhow), running fine.

Is this a timer/mileage activated thing like the one on my YJ, or do I need to check the codes?

You need to check the codes. Autozone not only checks the codes for you, but they now rent OBDII scanners if for some reason you want to take one with you.

My '00 XJ went well over that amount, no light ever came on, so I wouldn't say it's that... Only time mine ever threw a light is when I disconnected the IAC, and started it, and when there was a short in one of the fuel injector wires... That was a fun one to track down... Good luck finding it, let us know what it is, a little PM never hurt anything.

I have a 2000XJ and at 64k the engine light came on as well. Ended up being the downstream O2 sensor. Replaced sensor and no problems since. Good Luck

Well it went out for a few days, but came back on friday. It's running fine, so I think it can wait 'till this Friday.

I've got 84k on my 00 XJ and the light has never come on. Good luck.

Twisted,
Mine did the same thing, came on, I filled up with gas, it went away, a few days later the light comes back on. A week later its off. I fianally got mad and just bought an OBD II code reader and found out it was the Down Stream O2 sensor. Candaian Tire had Bosche replacement parts on for 1/2 price and I fixed it for for about $75. Good Luck.
P.S.Thanks for the post about the roof mounted spare, I had been giving thought to roof mounting my spare as well. I guess with the rear sway bar disconnected the added weight is something to consider. Something else to consider is that the tire is laying flat and any water will sit between the bead and the rim, causing the rim to rust if the wheel isn't covered. I'm leaning towards the Warn rear bumper and tire carrier.

RE: Guage question

I took it to autozone to check it out. (free - thanks Bounty) It said vacuum or emissions system leak. I was hoping it would have better pinpointed it, but at least that narrowed it down a bit.

Do you have the generic scan tool code? If you did maybe we could narrow it down to one sensor or cross refrence with the Haynes manual.

RE: jeep meanings vid

I don't know, the guy was kind of a jackass. When I asked to see the display, he turned it off. I'm going to replace my gas cap, as that is supposed to be the #1 cause for that code. I thought that was a silly idea, but it says right on the cap that a defective one will make the light come on. If that isn't it, I'll go to another place and check it again, but get the actual code.

Hi,

The scanner gave you a vague answer because the scanners which the auto part stores use are "dumbed down" a bit (on purpose of course). For a very thourough scan and diagnosis, you'd need access to the kind of scanners which most repair shops and the dealerships have.

As for the gas cap, that *could* be the problem, but likely would not be caused by a defective gas cap. Rather, most times the Check Engine light will come on due to a loose gas cap. If this is the case and you have re-tightened it, it will take a couple dozen driving cycles before the computer will clear any defunct codes.
