Provided that terminal 87 on the fan relay is putting out a voltage signal I gather you are not getting a reading at the harness plug at the electric fan ? If so , you'll want to check the ground on the harness plug. I'm also assuming that the electric fan is functional or you would not seek to add a thermo type switch to activate the fan. I only ask these questions the effort you apply to adding a thermo type switch to activate the fan could be spent getting the fan circuit working again. As long as the cooling system is working well , the factory electric fan is fairly efficient ( I find ) as kicks on with the activation of the compressor clutch. Just my thoughts .
