1. • 1Have an engine stand to work on your engine as you disassemble and assemble the block and head. And depending on how much of the work you plan on doing yourself and how much will be left to the machine shop, you might need engine assembly lube, torque wrench, piston ring compressor, valve spring compressor, wrench set, ratchet and socket set, screw driver set and crowbar.
     
     
   • 2Pull the engine from the Jeep using a hoist and mount it on an engine stand.
     
     
   • 3Remove and disassemble the engine head and cylinder block, organizing the parts on a shelf so that you know exactly the order in which each valve, piston and accessory was installed in the head and block.
     
     
   • 4Examine each part laid down on the shelf and look for possible damage. A close inspection may tell you a lot about the condition of the engine block, head, crankshaft and camshaft.
     
     
   • 5Take the engine block, head, crankshaft, camshaft, pistons and connecting rods assembly and valves to a machine shop for a thorough cleaning, inspection, cylinder honing and rectification, if necessary. The machine shop should check the engine block and head for cracks, flatness of mating surfaces and condition of valve guides.
     
     
   • 6Buy the engine rebuilding kit including gaskets, seals, bearings, piston rings and any other parts that need to be replaced like valves, pistons, lifters, rocker arms, valve springs and seals, according to the inspection results from the machine shop.
     
     
   • 7Mount the engine block on the engine stand and assemble the engine, making sure to follow the service manual instructions on torque, screw and bolt tightening sequence and order of assembly specifications; see the Tips at the bottom for more information.
     
     
   • 8Assemble the engine head using a valve spring compressor to install valves and accessories and install the head on the engine block.
     
     
   • 9Install the engine.

Well from someone who builds his own race engines. That's pretty much summed up with the addition of a wiegh scale and measuring tools to blueprint and balance everything.
