Drivetrain hump access panel on 2001 XJ

I’ve got the crank, no start issue with my 01 XJ, can hear fuel pump prime so looks like CPS replacement time (164K on original). While scoping out the job underneath I can see 5 screws protruding around an access panel in the driver side drivetrain hump near the rear of the tranny above a different sensor. Was this panel something added for just the last model year XJ? Seen posts about cutting a hole in earlier models, but not just lifting the carpet. I wonder if this might be my best solution for getting to CPS? Appears to be slightly forward of shifter. Thanks for any feedback!

i have no idea if it was added by a pervious owner or if its a factory deal but can youreach all the way to the cps from back there?
 
You mean CKP. CPS is apart of the distributer or on the OPDA.
CPK is usually on the bell housing and reachable from underneath.

Air fuel and spark. The ckp could be the issue if the vehicle has no spark. You may or may not have a code. Did you check the codes.

It has to be factory—I bought this XJ as a lease return at two years old. Was hoping someone had tried it before, but the point is moot now—had my local shop replace it. No big deal if you have a lift…. Thanks for responding!

Here’s the part that fixed the problem:

MasterPro Ignition 3 Terminal Crankshaft Position/Angle Sensor - 2-96126​

Might be splitting hairs, but looks like a CPS measures CKP. At least I found the right part googling CPS, and it does mount quite inconveniently on the bell housing.

I know— this behavior didn’t make any sense at all. She had fuel at the injector rail, no check engine light, put a fresh battery in, even shorted the starter relay. Same crank, no start. Checked codes when we got her home, nada. The shop wouldn’t use the sensor I bought and replaced it with their own, still no joy and was moving on to CPU. I had them try the MasterPro part I provided and she fired right up.
