Do you have a skid plate story?

Right now I've just got the factory skid plates on my TJ Wrangler X (no lift). Around Florida I'm mostly concerned with smacking a stump in the mud or playing Titanic against a limerock boulder that's hiding like an iceberg. I don't have the cash right now to completely armor the underbody so I wanted to get some recommendations on where to start. So can you let me know your could've, should've, would've stories regarding skid plates?

RE Will tires fit on wheels?

You can brace and add armor to your factory skidplate. I know, that's easier said than done if you don't have the tools to do it......but other than replacing it with a heavy duty skidplate, it's about your only option. A plasma cutter, a mig welder, and some 3/16-1/4" steel plate makes it a quick job if you have access to those pieces of equipment.

RE: Re: RE: poor little Snitty needs some help...

my skidplate has formed around my tcase and transmission! ill be building a new perfectly flat on after my transmission swap, talk about ground clearance! sorry to hijack...

the best thing to do is leave it alone, unless your running rocks every weekend or bouncing through the marshes like a hillbilly in a hydrofoil you ought to be ok with your stock skid. and engine skid might be a good idea, run a piece of plate from the tcase skid all the way up to the sump in your oil pan and use the control arm bolts and some L shaped brackets to hold it on. just look at other skid plates out there and draw some ideas from them and protect what you deem necessary for the kind of wheelin you do

Put skids on what hangs down the lowest. I've smashed up the rear diff cover on my cj pretty bad; now it takes a good deal of gasket maker to make it seal. I would reccommend protecting the diff covers, maybe beefing up the t-case skid, and and putting a skid under the sump on the engine oil pan. Drive shafts can be vulnerable too, though i've never had a problem with hitting them on objects.

What about the steering box skid? How important is that if you run rocks fairly often?

South, I guess I am lucky that I have a YJ with lift shacles, my steering box is not protected, but when I come up to a obsticle, 99% of the time, the shackle makes contact prior to the steering box.

i geuss it just depends on what kind of driver you are, i dont worry about my steering box cuz i have leafs and the shackles offer some protection but its still in my mind when i drive. if you feel like you need it then do it, if you need to use your steering box to help you slide up onto a rock then go for
