Do "hood scoops" work?

I noticed that I do not have a lot of vent air flow force. I also noticed that those cowl hood scoop things we've all seen in catalogs say that they improve this. Any consumer input on how well these work? thanks. jered

they are bound to help some what. I do not have one but would buy on if I got to the point that there was not things just needed like lifts tires shocks ect... Blazer heater blower motor is cheaper and will make a big differnce. That is a sure bet. tug

I've read they are to be mounted with the opening towards the windshield, kinda goes against the way you would think they should be installed.

It's cheap, go for it. Or rig something up with cardboard and ducttape to temporarily test the theory.

Hello JeredYJ,

I have a cowl vent scoop mounted on my CJ, but I bought it to stop pine tree needles, leaves and other assorted debris from piling up in the cavity below the cowl vent grill. It is amazing how much rotting vegetation accumulates in that hole.

It is also useful where I live to prevent snow from partially filling the cavity below cowl vent grill and blocking the heater air intake.

As regards increasing the flow of air through the heating-ventilation system, I see no change. I have tried mounting the scoop opening to the face forward and rearward. In my opinion, for that purpose, the scoop is worthless.

i'm with bounty... McGuyver yourself a scoop with some duct tape... see if you like the results

I have also heard that they go on with the opening toward the windshield. When the air hits the windshield, I am guessing it creates tubulence and churns the airflow downward and forces it into the vent intake.

I too have been thinking about getting one of the scoops for my TJ, but for the same reasons as Gadget. However if there was any kind of increase in air flow I wouldn't mind
