Did they stop making parts for a 93 or something?

Hey everyone. I'm getting sick of pushing my jeep to the gas station because of my fuel gage (Yeah, yeah... I use the trip odometer, and have a gerry can) It's not so much the fact that I'm lazy, and have neglected the repair... I simply can't find a sending unit! Every place I look sells them up to 1990. Is that compatible with my 93? I also need ideas with storage, if you guys and gals have any. I'm already fabricating saddle bags, but would like some suggestions for other fabs. Thanks guys!

Ps - Tug, Rob, Terry, Nate, Reggie, Ray..... you da men!

What's the fuel guage doing?

In the older YJ's, not sure if it would apply to yours, the fix was to clean the contacts on the circuit board behind the guages, then the gas guage would work better.[addsig]

yea on my 91 it has some kind of printed circuit board but its not solid its more like heavy plastic look for burt places where it has shorted out, or set down take the time follow all the little lines and hard wire it, that what I had to do for my Oil pressure, and fuel, not hard soldering gun some 16-18 AWG wire braided and go to town just take your time

Hey Bounty... it's not reading past an 8th of a tank...sometimes more. it's really starting to honk me off.

Marc... do you think the connectors would be the culpret if they were burned? [addsig]

Mine doesn't go below 1/4 of a tank. I made my own camoflage overlays... My fix was to just make the 1/4 mark my empty mark.... plain and simple.... then to touch on the initial question... It doesn't really matter if they stop making parts... Just make your own... its what jeeps are for   [addsig]

tug - that's not funny! :)

there's a sending unit in the gas tank... chances are that it is plugged/gummed/corroded/etc...

if i had a scanner i'd scan you in a page of my hayne's manual... and my webcam doesn't cut it either. section 4-5 in my haynes manual... "Fuel Tank - Removal and Installation" in the diagram shows the sending unit and connector...[addsig]

Yeah, I saw that one Nate. I went down to get another unit from NAPA, and they didn't carry it.... like they stopped making them from 1991 to 1996. it's bizzarr. I'll tear the SOB apart when it gets warmer and see what the culpret is.[addsig]

Well my Haynes manual says that the fuel pump/sending unit are ONE PIECE for 1991 and later models. The 4.2 engines used a mechanical pump and the sender unit was separate. I bet that is why you cannot find a sending unit for 1991 and later...because there aren't any...you have to buy the whole fuel pump to get the sender. It also says that there is a tbi unit and an mpi unit and they look alike but are NOT the same. For your 93 you will need to get the MPI fuel pump/sending unit assembly. I would check out the guage before you go dropping the gas tank and stuff. I have heard of the contacts on the guage getting dirty/corroded/shorted because of water leaking in from the windshield seal. Hope that helps.[addsig]

Appreciate it you guys! I'm going out tomorrow to do some "constructive" work in the Jeep. I'll check the Guage first.

Thanks for the info Ray.

If your fuel gauge, is like mine, there is a couple of screws behind it, on the contact strip, remove the screws and clean behind there. The material of the screws seems to be slightly incompatible with the copper on the strip (circuit board) and grows green stuff, cleaning often helps the gauge to function better. The amount of current passing through the gauge, then through the sending unit is really small, most any dirty contact (in any connector) can affect it by making a resistance. Cleaning everything first, often helps, and is a whole lot easier than changing the sender.
In ÝJ´s the more resistance, the higher the gas gauge goes, if you unplug it(between the gauge and sender) it goes all the way full.
If it stays at the bottom, probably open circuit (no juice), faulty gauge, shorted wire or stuck (shorted) sender.[addsig]
