I am hoping to salvage parts from a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo to repair a 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland. Both vehicles are 4.7 V8s.
The 2000 was purchased new and it blew an engine rod after 295K.
The 2002 was purchased last month from original owner with 151K.
There was a fluid leak on the left rear wheel which turned out to be a rear axle seal. A local auto shop replaced axle bearing and seal and topped off the axle lubricant. That stopped the leak.
However, when first starting up and turning wheel hard left or right there is a groan or growl from the rear differential, Dana 35 is my guess. Nothing major just a momentary groan. After the vehicle is warmed up there is no problem with hard turns in parking lots etc. And the vehicle runs fine otherwise.
If the condition does not get worse, should I keep driving as is? Or, replace parts from 2000, which never had any rear differential problems. Or, swap out rear axles from 2000 to 2002.
Looking for local Jeep mechanic, or advise on best way to proceed.
As soon as I feel comfortable with the 2002's reliability, the 2000 is off to the junk yard.
