Dewey State Bridge - Burned out of existence

I was saddened to hear that Dewey State Bridge burned out of existence Sunday afternoon and evening.

Dewey Bridge served as a crossing point on the Colorado River. It was located 28 miles East of Moab on scenic highway 128. It was a part of the Kokopelli Trail for mountain bikers and hikers.

It was no longer used as a traffic bridge. It was built in 1915 to 1916 and decommissioned in 1988. It was on the listing of National Historic Landmarks.

As you know, I was in Moab last week. My friend Tom, my dog Molly and I all walked that bridge on Friday afternoon (4/4).

The bridge burned on Sunday afternoon and evening (4/7). The word is that a 7 year old Grand Junction boy was playing with matches in the brush of the river bank near the bridge.

We had a historic train tressle burned down two years ago by a middle schooler who claims he was shooting roman candles. It's more likely that he burned it on purpose.
The structure was about 8 to 10 stories high if I had to guess. It was made of creosote coated wood and burned hot and fast once it caught fire. I was told way back when that it was the tallest wooden bridge east of the Mississippi. It had been decommissioned years ago, but still looked perfectly functional. Jeepers used to drive across it kind of as a right of passage and test of fortitude. Cross ties aren't all that wide for a Jeep. Ashamed to lose.
