today i tore apart my rear end the bearings on the pinion were shot u could move the yoke up down and all around the new bearings wont be in untill tom. morning i was just wondering how hard it is to get it all back together right and if anybody had a good link telling how to do everything thanks for any help

bad news... its NOT easy at all... i was driving one day.. and heard some strange noise in the rear... put it up on the lift... and could move the pinion yoke as you described... the bearing was definitely shot.... so i cracked the diff open... and busted about 1/3 of the teeth off the pinion gear, and 2 teeth off the ring.... time to dig into the donor... it took me about an hour to replace everything... but i must have had some angel over my shoulder because i've had no problem with it yet.... usually, you can't just toss everything back in and call it a day... you will have to line everything up perfectly... the spacing in every part is crutial to the next... it is best left to the pro's

lol thats good to hear but i didnt bust anything and i know where they had all the shims so the only thing i am replaceing is the bearings hopefully it wont be to bad i have all day to mess with it

you might not have broke anything but what snitty is saying is that you have to take everything apart to replace those bearing...putting a ring and pinion back together requires the shimming of pinion depth and the trimming of the carrier side to side. ( shims are added until you get a prefect contact patch betwwen the ring and pinion.

sometimes the old shim packs will do just fine for setting up the gears...other times it will not.

how to put on a belt

yeah i went to the local dealership and got some shims it wasnt that bad of a job just took some time but i ended up with a pretty good contact patern so i guess all is well

best wishes in keeping it together.. mine worked fine, and is still working fine... i just replicated what i saw when i took it out

jeepguy, do you ever use punctuation? Like periods or commas... or even capital letters so we can see where your sentences begin and end? Just pickin.

My comment - it's just a dana 35, you could probably swap a whole new one in from a junkyard for less time and about the same $. Pull your old axle shafts out for spares, the brake drums and shoes, and chunk the rest. Just my opinion.

hey the best info i have is to have it professionally done, trust me i took my limited slip diff. out to put in a stock diff and a locker and the biggest problem i had was finding the right shims to fit with the new carrier. if you are going to do it yourself i went to "ask jeeves" and found alot of good info there.

Sorry about not using periods and commas, I just start typing and go. As for the rearend i have put about 700mi on it,and it is still going so we will see.
