Dana 300 questions

I have a couple of questions about the Dana 300 transfer case.
(1). after removing the shift rails and forks there are two "pills"
and two sets of springs and poppet ball bearings that fall into detents in the rails. The two springs are slightly different, one is slightly larger and longer.
I was not carefull enough on the dissassembly, which spring goes in which
hole? Does it matter( I assume that it does)?
(2). Could someone give me the dimensions of the shift rails protruding outside of the case for the different gear positions? e.g. 4L,4H.N,2H.
Thanks!
J.B.

I did the same thing when i first rebuilt my Dana 300..I reinstalled the springs and the ball bearings. then i looked at the height of the 2 ball bearings, they should sit even in the hole..if not, swap the springs and recheck.. the shift rails and forks can only be installed one way..the offset of the forks will guide you on which one goes where..
